    Editor Henry Slocum,
I read your May 10th article in the local newspaper Honesdale Times about electronic books,or e-books,with great interest. You made several good points about the disadvantages of e-books.You may have overlooked, however, some of the ways in which they are superior to traditional books.Yes,e-books are expensive, but they are also convenient. In addition, due to their environment-friendly nature, e-books have the potential to change our planet for the better.
E-books, for anyone who is unfamiliar with the term, are about the same size and shape as regular books. They have a large screen in the middle, however. This screen shows the reader a page of text that has been downloaded from a computer.Once the reader has finished reading the page on the e-book screen, he or she scrolls down to see a new page. The process continues until the entire book has been read.
As you pointed out, Mr.Slocum,it's great to lie on a warm, sandy beach with a book. You can do that just as easily with an e-book as you can with a traditional paper book.In fact, because e-books are so light, you can carry them anywhere.Say,for example, that you like to read on the bus.Which would you rather carry with you — a heavy 800-page novel,or an e-book that weighs only a few ounces?
Another important advantage is offered by e-books as well. They are more environment friendly than traditional books. At present, thousands of trees are cut down each year to meet the publishing industry’s demand for paper.Books that don’t sell are eventually returned to the publisher and destroyed. This terrible waste could be avoided if everyone used e-books,which require no paper.
    Sincerely,
                                                          David Eng

Author Gwen Cooper traveled to animal shelters and rescue groups from May through September, donating supplies and talking to people about her new book, Love Saves the Day. She plans to finish the tour by December, and by then will have donated more than $40,000 worth of products to shelters and raised $5,000 more to help them.
A big part of what she does is a tour of animal shelters instead of bookstores. And a lot of what she does is letting people know of rescue organizations, the work they do and the kinds of animals they work with. Also because her last book is about her cat Homer, who is blind, there is a lot of work that she does with special and disabled animals.
Ever since she was a little girl, she had a passion for two things---books and animals. People always ask her, "Why do you care so much about animals?" However, she always wants to ask them, "Why don’t you care so much about animals?" It is never really a decision that she has made; it’s just the way she has always been. But really she doesn’t like to see anyone suffer whether it’s a person or an animal, as she thinks whether we walk on two legs or four, suffering is suffering.
Although her latest book Love Saves the Day is written for adults, there is a message for kids in it, which is, learning to appreciate their parents. It is a story of a mother and a grown daughter who have a very difficult relationship. A big part of what the daughter has to learn is to see things from her mother’s point of view. One of the key parts of the book is how the mother and daughter learn to better understand each other.

"Grandma, Grandma, tell us a story!" Four darling children sat by my feet, looking up at me expectantly.Suddenly, we were interrupted by clapping. "Terrific," the director said, stepping up the stage from the aisle(过道)."Except, could you kids face the audience a bit more?"
The kids shifted to face the empty seats, which would be filled in a few days for the church play. "Perfect," the director said. "Now, Grandma, read to your grandchildren." A pan of sadness hit me.If only I could read to my real grandchild!
I had a granddaughter, but I'd never met her.Sixteen years earlier my son was involved in a relationship that ended badly. But out of it came a blessing: a baby girl named Lena.I hoped to be a grandmother to her — but shortly after the birth, the mother moved without any address left.Over the years, I asked around town to try to find my son’s ex-wife , but it seemed that she didn’t want to be found.
I'd just joined this new church a week earlier and was at once offered the part of Grandma in the play.At least now I could pretend to be a grandma. The rehearsals went well, and finally the day of the show arrived. The performance was great."You all looked so natural up there," one of my friends said.
Afterward, I walked over to one of the girls in the play."How's my granddaughter?" I joked.
"Fine!" she answered.Just then, someone else walked up and asked the girl her name.
I wasn't sure I heard the girl's answer correctly. But it made me ask her another question."What's your mother's name?"
She told me, but I was still in shock."And what's your father's name?" I asked. She told me. It was my son.
She'd only started going to that church a week before I did.Since that day of the play, we've stayed close. Not long ago, she even made me a great grandma.

There is a story about a man who lost his legs and left arm in an accident. After the accident, only a finger and thumb on his right hand remained.

He was afraid that he would spend the rest of his life suffering and would no longer be able to spend his life in a meaningful way.       Then, he realized that he still had partial function of his right hand and could still write even though it was very difficult.         For their nick-of-time acts, Toby, a 2-year-old dog, and Winnie, a cute cat, were named Dog and Cat of the Year by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
As Amy Paul choked on a piece of apple at her home, her dog jumped up, landing hard on her chest and forcing the piece in her throat out. When the Keesling family of Indiana was about to be killed by carbon monoxide(一氧化碳), their cat clawed at the wife Cathy’s hair until she woke up and called for help.
No one could explain their timely heroics.
Both pets were rescued by their owners in infancy — Toby as a 4-week-old thrown into a dustbin to die, and Winnie as a week-old orphan hiding under a barn, so helpless that Cathy’s husband, Eric, had to feed her milk with a special tool.
As the Keeslings recalled it, a gas-driven pump being used broke down, spreading carbon monoxide through the house. By the time Winnie went to rescue, the couple’s 14-year-old son was already unconscious. "Winnie jumped on the bed and was clawing at me, with a kind of angry sound," Cathy Keesling said. The state police responding to her 911 call said the family was only minutes from death, judging by the amount of poisonous gas in the house.
Amy Paul’s husband was at his job when she took a midday break from making jewelry and bit into an apple. "Normally I peel(削皮) them, but I read in Good Housekeeping Magazine that the skin has all the nutrients, so I ate the skin, and that’s what caused me to choke," she recalled. "I couldn’t breathe and I was in panic when Toby jumped on me. He never does that, but he did, and saved my life."
Both Toby and Winnie accompanied their owners to the awards lunch.
61.Why did Amy Paul choke on a piece of apple?

64.What caused the carbon monoxide spreading through the house?
        A. A pump breaking down.          B. A driver breaking into the house.
        C. The burning gas.              D. The poisonous gas.
65.What would be the suitable title for the passage?
       A. So Smart Animals Are          B. Dog and Cat Honored for Saving Their Masters

[1] "Don’t stare. Chew with your mouth closed." Manner minding is expected everywhere, at school, work, home, and even the Internet. What is netiquette? It’s network etiquette(礼仪), a set of rules for behaving properly online.
    [2] It’s easy to misunderstand
When you communicate online, all you see is a computer screen. You can’t use facial expressions, gestures, or tone of voice; words are the only information. It’s easy to misunderstand others’ meanings and forget that they are real people just like you!
    [3] "Look" good online
Networks let you reach out to people you’d otherwise never meet. And none of them can see you. You won’t be judged by the color of your skin, eyes or hair, your weight, your age, or your clothing. You will, however, be judged by the quality of your writing. So spelling, grammar, and content really matter.
    [4] Share expert knowledge
The reason why asking questions online works is that a lot of knowledgeable people are reading the questions. If you ask a question, it’s polite to share the answers with others. If you’re an expert yourself, _________. It’s a long-time net tradition, and it makes the network a better place.
    [5] Forgive mistakes
Everyone was a green hand at network once. So when someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a spelling error or a stupid question, be kind about it. If you do decide to inform someone of a mistake, point it out politely.
    66. What is the text mainly about? (no more than 10 words)
    67. Why is it easy to misunderstand others’ meanings online? (no more than 17 words)
    68. List three things to judge the quality of one’s writing online.(no more than 5 words)

    69. Fill in the blank in paragraph 4 with proper words.(no more than 6 words)
